Signs Your Air Conditioner May Soon Need a Repair
Some symptoms your air conditioning system could need a repair include:
- Lack of cool air. This is easiest tell-tale sign that your air conditioner needs a repair. If your system struggles to blow cool air, it could be a sign that a component of your air conditioner is starting to fail.
- Short Cycling. This is when your air conditioning system starts a cooling cycle, shuts down prematurely, then starts back up a short time later. Typically, your air conditioner will undergo three cooling cycles per hour, each lasting approximately 10 minutes. When you turn on the system, your A/C compressor will run for 10 minutes, stop for 10 minutes, and repeat this cycle two more times during an hour. With a short cycle, the cycle of your compressor turning on and off is shorter than the 10 minute cycle. Your compressor kicking on and off more than it should causes excessive wear and tear.
- Rising energy bills. If you set your thermostat to a constant temperature yet you notice your energy bills start to rise, this could be a sign that your air conditioner is working overtime to try to keep your home cool.
- Aging system. A properly maintained air conditioner has an expected lifespan of 10-15 years. As your air conditioner starts to near the end of its lifespan, you will start to notice the system will not perform as it was in its original state.
Do I Need an Air Conditioning Repair or an Air Conditioning Replacement?
- Your A/C is 5 years old. Consider repairing your system to restore it back to working order.
- Your A/C is 12 years old with no breakdowns. Consider repairing your system to restore it back to working order.
- Your A/C is 12 years old with occasional or multiple breakdowns. Consider repairing your system as a temporary “band-aid” solution. Consider replacing your system soon as your air conditioner may soon fail completely.
- Your A/C is 30 years old. Consider replacing your system. A “band-aid” repair may not be possible as it can be hard to find replacement parts for older cooling systems.
