But even the best system needs a little attention now and then. No matter where it’s installed—or who installed it—your mini split needs regular maintenance to stay efficient and avoid problems like poor airflow, musty smells, high energy bills, and surprise breakdowns due to system wear.

When is the Best Time to Schedule Ductless Maintenance?
The best time to schedule ductless mini split maintenance service in San Diego is right before the start of heating or cooling season—spring or fall are ideal. But if that window’s already passed? No worries. Like getting your yearly physical, what matters most is that you actually get it done.
Whether your unit’s brand new or a few years old, it’ll benefit from a tune-up. Just pick a time that works and book it—we’ll take care of the rest.

Ductless Mini Split Maintenance Checklist: How Our Technicians Keep Your System in Top Shape
If you had your system installed by Guthrie & Sons, you got a rundown on basic care, like how to rinse the filters and keep the unit clear of dust. And if another company installed it, hopefully, they gave you a few ductless mini split maintenance tips, too. Things like that are helpful, but they’re not enough to keep your system running like new.
DIY ductless mini split maintenance only goes so far. You can clean the surface and change the filter, but you can’t check refrigerant pressure, test electrical components, or catch early signs of corrosion. That’s why it’s so important to schedule a professional tune-up at least once a year.
When you book with Guthrie & Sons, you get licensed, insured, NATE-certified techs who know these systems inside and out. We don’t just take a quick look—we do a full inspection, cleanout, and performance check. Here’s what’s included in our ductless mini split maintenance service:
We clean the indoor unit to remove dust, grime, and buildup that can block airflow and lower efficiency. The outdoor unit gets the same attention—we clear out leaves, dirt, and debris that can clog the fan or cause overheating. This kind of cleaning helps your system run quieter, cool or heat faster, and keeps your air feeling fresher.
Moisture issues are common in mini splits, especially if the drain lines get clogged or the drain pan starts backing up. We flush the drain lines, check PVC connections, and inspect the condensate pump and tubing. This helps prevent leaks, mold growth, musty smells, and water damage, especially in spots like garages or enclosed sunrooms where airflow is tighter.
We check every electrical connection inside the system—tightening loose wires, testing amps, and making sure your safety controls are fully functional. We run a full startup-to-shutdown sequence to confirm everything’s working smoothly. If something’s off, we’ll catch it now—before it turns into an outage or a dangerous short.
This is where we really get under the hood. We measure refrigerant levels, check suction and discharge pressures, and test the compressor and outdoor fan motor. If pressure levels are off or refrigerant is low, your system may be working harder than it should and costing you more to run. We’ll correct what needs fixing and explain exactly what’s going on.
If we find something that needs a closer look—whether it’s a part wearing down, a clogged drain, or low refrigerant—we’ll let you know and walk through your options. If your system’s getting older and you’re starting to see more frequent issues, we’ll give you honest guidance about next steps. At Guthrie & Sons, we’re not here to upsell—we’re here to help you stay comfortable, save money, and keep your system going strong.

Frequently Asked Questions
In San Diego, we recommend scheduling ductless mini split maintenance service once a year—usually in spring or fall. Even though our climate is mild, your system still works hard. Regular tune-ups help prep it for cooler winter nights or hot summer afternoons.
Costs can vary depending on your setup, but most tune-ups fall in the affordable range. We’ll give you clear, upfront pricing before we start—no surprises, no pressure. Maintenance plans can help lower costs even more.
If your system isn’t heating or cooling like it used to, makes unusual noises, or has weak airflow, it’s time for a tune-up. Bad smells, rising energy bills, or water leaks are also red flags. When in doubt, give us a call—we’ll take a look.
Yes—all indoor units in a multi-zone setup should be checked and cleaned during your annual maintenance. Each one runs separately, so skipping one can lead to uneven performance. We’ll service them all during your visit to keep the whole system in sync.

Just installed yesterday, so jury is still out on the system, but installation was thorough and great communication so far!
Updated review: Kareen, Daniel and Michael worked on the AC replacement, relocation of furnace to the attic and replacement of ductwork. Very professional and knowledgeable team in my opinion. Completed the work in a timely and very satisfactory manner.
Their customer service started with the on line completion of a basic information form. Shortly after submitting that form, I heard from Zach who scheduled an appointment at my home.
I had already met with three other HVAC contractors, and for that reason, I had some basic information about the systems available and how heat pumps work and whether propane furnaces should also be installed. I signed a contract on a Friday. By Wednesday of the next week they had completed the installation. Wow.
The installation of one of the furnaces in the attic caused minor damage to the drywall. THEY BROUGHT IT TO MY ATTENTION and told me a drywall contractor would be in touch regarding its repair. Two days later it was repaired.
Since installation, the equipment (heat pumps from Bosch) has been working great and I am optimistic about the future. Meanwhile, their pricing, warranty and terms are far superior to their competitors.
Since this is an unusually long review and so favorable, let me add this: This is my honest, uncompensated opinion. I have no relationship with anyone at Guthrie & Sons other than the contract we executed.
They respected my property and made sure everything was left at least as clean was when they arrived. The job was completed on time and as promised and they reviewed the details of the system and its use clearly. I would definitely have Guthrie and Sons do other electrical/HVAC work should the need arise.
Jonathan gave us the likeliest problems so we’ll have to get it fixed
