What Is the Best Month to Buy a Furnace?

If you’ve started thinking about buying a furnace, timing actually matters more than most people realize. Prices shift throughout the year, demand goes up and down, and certain months make it easier to compare options without feeling rushed.

We may not deal with super harsh winters here in the San Diego area, but we absolutely do feel it when it drops into the mid-40s on a January morning. You need a working furnace to stay warm, and choosing the right time to buy can save you money, reduce stress, and give you more options. A little planning goes a long way when you’re deciding the best month to buy a furnace. In this blog from Guthrie & Sons Heating, Air & Solar, we’ll answer this frequently asked question and give you more things you need to consider along the way.

Why Timing Matters When Buying a Furnace

Buying a furnace isn’t like buying a toaster. Prices, availability, and installation timelines all shift depending on what’s happening in the industry and the season. Here’s why timing affects things:

  • Contractors are busiest during winter heating calls and summer AC calls.
  • Equipment availability changes as manufacturers release new models or sell through seasonal stock.
  • Special promotions often line up with low-demand periods.
  • Emergency replacements cost more—both financially and emotionally—because you’re making a quick decision.

If you’re putting in a central heating system for the first time, you have more control over the timing. You can always buy it earlier to get the best deals! If you’re replacing an old furnace, you don’t always get that luxury—sometimes it just dies. But when you can plan ahead, choosing the right month saves money, stress, and a whole lot of rushing.

Buying a Furnace in Winter

Winter is when heating systems reveal their problems, which naturally makes it the busiest time of year for furnace work. When temperatures drop and people start relying on their heat every day, any weak or aging system suddenly becomes impossible to ignore.

Pros

If your furnace fails in winter, you won’t have to wonder whether you actually need a furnace replacement—the problem becomes obvious. Technicians are already focused on heating work this time of year, so diagnosing the issue or confirming the right size for your new HVAC system tends to be quick and straightforward. You’re solving a real problem in the moment, which makes the decision feel clearer.

Cons

Winter limits your flexibility more than any other season. With many homeowners calling at once, installation schedules fill up quickly, and some furnace models—like popular natural gas furnaces or high efficiency models—may sell out. You also don’t get much time to weigh your options; when your house is cold, the priority is getting heat back on. It works, but it’s rarely the ideal moment to compare furnace efficiency, operating costs, or different fuel types.

Buying a Furnace in Spring

Spring is one of the most comfortable times of the year to tackle a furnace project. Temperatures are mild, and it’s far enough away from winter that the rush for heating repairs has finally settled down. If you’re looking to upgrade before your system becomes unreliable, spring gives you plenty of space to plan.

Pros

With fewer heating emergencies happening, technicians usually have more availability and can schedule appointments sooner. Pricing is often steady, and manufacturers sometimes begin offering early-season promotions. Since you’re not depending on heat during this time, you can take your time choosing a system and schedule the installation when it’s convenient.

Cons

As spring moves closer to summer, cooling maintenance and AC tune-ups start picking up. Scheduling stays easier than winter, but you may notice things getting a bit busier later in the season. Otherwise, spring is generally one of the least stressful times to buy a furnace.

Buying a Furnace in Summer

During the summer months, almost all attention shifts toward air conditioning. That means heating systems aren’t top of mind for most homeowners, which actually creates a good opportunity if you’re trying to plan ahead or replace an aging furnace before the cold returns.

Pros

With heating calls at their lowest, you often get wide-open scheduling and more flexibility to choose installation dates that work for you. Technicians also have more time to talk through different furnace options, explain efficiency differences, and help you sort out what makes sense for your home. Making the decision long before the heating season gives you peace of mind going into fall and winter.

Cons

Late summer can get busy due to AC breakdowns, which may temporarily tighten availability. It’s still easier than winter, but it’s smart to schedule ahead if you want a specific date. Summer also makes it easy to put the project off since you’re not thinking about heat—so it’s common for homeowners to delay longer than they intended.

Buying a Furnace in Fall

Fall is the final window before homeowners start relying on their heat again, and it often becomes a natural reminder to check whether your furnace is ready for the colder months ahead. If you didn’t get to it in spring or summer, early fall is another strong option for your furnace upgrade.

Pros

Fall offers a balance between manageable demand and the motivation to get things done before the season switches. Technicians can usually schedule installations fairly quickly, and you still have access to a wide range of furnace options before winter demand spikes. Replacing an older system now also helps you avoid problems later when you need heat the most.

Cons

As temperatures drop, more homeowners start turning on their furnaces and calling about issues. Availability narrows the deeper you get into the season, and waiting too long can push you right into winter’s crowded schedule. Fall is a great time to buy, but it’s best not to wait until the last minute to have your furnace installed.

So…What Month Should You Buy a Furnace?

For the best mix of availability, pricing, and low stress, aim for:

  • Late spring (May–June)
  • Early fall (September–October)

But ultimately, the right time for buying a new furnace comes down to your existing system’s condition, your budget, and how much flexibility you want in the process. If the system is struggling or costing you more and more money in repairs and higher energy bills, it makes sense to buy sooner rather than later.

I was told by a couple other companies that I needed to replace my system. Vlad came out and made sure that my old system actually needed to be replaced and found it could be fixed for a fraction of the price. I appreciate the honesty and would definitely recommend. Edit the technician came out and made the repairs. He did a good job of explaining the situation and giving a couple options.

We had Rob from Guthrie & Sons come out to repair one of our A/C units. Rob was very friendly and professional. Rob resolved the problem quickly.
As far as price goes, I paid a higher flat fee 12 years ago from one of the larger local companies. I'm very impressed with pricing and quality of work.

I highly recommend Guthrie & Sons and Rob.

Guthrie & Sons has always been super professional and knowledgeable about our system. They did the install a few years ago and have continued to maintain it for us. This year we noticed that our system wasn't performing as well, so when Wayne came out, he noticed a likely leak and was back 2 days later to find and fix it. He was quick, professional, and just extremely nice! 100% recommend.

Called one of the "big guys" in town and the estimate to do what needed to be done to diagnose my problem was nearly 1/2 the cost of the system when I purchased it and had it installed 5.5 years ago, I found Guthrie & Sons and they came out the same day and did the same work for 1/4 the price I was quoted for the same exact work! Daniel was friendly, honest and quickly got my system working as expected. I even purchased the service plan so I don't have future problems. I highly recommend these guys, they were awesome, don't get ripped off call Guthrie & Sons!!!

The air handler was carefully installed, wiring neatly secured, plenum perfectly fitted, and the condenser precisely positioned and leveled for proper clearance and vibration control. The line set was pressure-tested and vacuumed as well. They also left the work area clean and neat.

Please congratulate them for a job well done!

After dealing with several HVAC companies, Guthrie & Sons clearly stood out as the most ethical, honest, and reliable. From the very beginning, their approach felt transparent and genuinely focused on what was best for us—not on upselling or unnecessary replacements.

We worked with Vlad T., who had previously been out to our home and saved us tens of thousands of dollars by getting our existing AC unit up and running when other companies were pushing for a full replacement. That experience alone earned our trust.

Now that we’re finally ready to purchase new units, there was no question that Guthrie & Sons was the only company we would consider, and Vlad was the obvious choice. He was extremely professional, punctual, and exceptionally knowledgeable, taking the time to explain options clearly and thoroughly. His expertise and honesty made the entire process straightforward and stress-free.

If you’re looking for an HVAC company you can truly trust—one that values integrity, quality workmanship, and customer service—I cannot recommend Guthrie & Sons and Vlad T. highly enough. This is how service should be done.

The layout of my condo made installing splits challenging, and before I met with Guthrie and Sons, three companies either told me that it couldn't be done. Vlad studied my apartment until he found a way to install with minimal openings in the walls and without a second condenser. Mallory, who works in the office, always followed through and advised me when I ran into a hiccup and needed detailed plans for the city. My HOA appreciated Guthrie and Sons' thoroughness and was so impressed with the design, that another resident who had been wanting splits for years, decided to install splits at the same time. The team that came in was knowledgeable, professional, and hard working. They finished a day ahead of time. I'm thrilled with the way everything looks and works.

I’ve been using Guthrie & Sons for over 15 years. They installed my whole AC system and maintained it all those years and never had an issue. Well it was time for an upgrade and they’ve recently installed my second system. The team 15 years ago and the team this time around were both amazing, professional and clean. I can’t recommend them enough Matt, Ben, Christian and Bryan get 10 stars. They are a bit pricier but worth the investment when you have peace of mind and almost two decades of great service and no issues.
