Cost of Ductless Mini Split Installation in San Diego (2026)

Are you thinking about installing a ductless mini split system in your San Diego home? Ductless mini split systems are more popular than ever, especially along the coast. They’re a natural fit for our climate and the way homes are set up here. But there’s always one big question: what does a ductless mini split installation cost? In this blog from Guthrie & Sons Heating, Air & Solar, we’ll break down the ductless mini split cost and show you how to get the most for your money.

Where Can Ductless Mini Splits Be Installed?

Before we get too far into pricing, it helps to understand where you can install a mini split. A ductless mini split system gives you flexibility that a traditional air conditioner setup does not. It works well in spaces that were never designed for ductwork or where cooling has always been uneven.

  • Converted garages turned into living or working spaces without central AC
  • ADUs and backyard units where running ducts is not practical
  • Historic homes in coastal neighborhoods without ductwork
  • Primary bedrooms that stay warmer than the rest of the house
  • Attics and lofts that hold heat throughout the day
  • Upstairs rooms or additions that never cool evenly
  • Home offices or rental units that need separate temperature control

You’ll see ductless mini split systems all over San Diego, especially in Ocean Beach, North Park, La Jolla, Point Loma, and South Park. We’re also seeing more in Chula Vista and Carmel Valley! You can install a mini split as a single-zone mini split with one outdoor unit and one indoor unit for a single space, step up to dual-zone setups, or use a multi-zone system with one outdoor unit connected to several indoor units across 4–5 zones to cool the entire home and replace a full central air conditioner system.

How Much Does a Ductless Mini Split Installation Cost? Factors You Need to Know

Your ductless mini split installation cost really comes down to a few key things—how big the system needs to be, how many rooms you want to cover, and what’s involved in the installation. Every home is different, so the total cost can vary quite a bit. Before you look at your mini split cost, it helps to understand what actually goes into pricing.

System Size and Layout

System size is one of the biggest drivers of cost. A single zone system for a bedroom or office is on the lower end, while larger spaces or homes with open layouts need more capacity. If the system is undersized, it will run constantly without keeping up, while an oversized system can short cycle and wear out faster. Getting the sizing right is key to comfort and long-term performance.

Number of Indoor Units and Zones

A basic mini split AC setup includes one indoor unit connected to one outdoor unit, but many homes need more coverage. If you are cooling multiple rooms, you will need additional indoor units tied into the system. Multi zone systems allow you to control each area separately, but each added zone increases equipment, installation time, and overall cost.

Type of System You Choose

Most mini splits today are heat pump systems, which means they handle both heating and cooling in one setup. That works well in San Diego, where you need cooling most of the year but still want heat during cooler mornings and nights. The system type you choose, including the brand name and other features, will affect the overall cost.

Installation and Labor Costs

Labor costs depend on how straightforward the installation is. A simple install with easy access takes less time, while homes with tight spaces, second stories, or limited mounting options require more planning and labor. Professional installation ensures everything is properly mounted, sealed, and tested so the system runs efficiently from day one.

Electrical Work and Upgrades

Some homes need electrical upgrades before a mini split can be installed. This can include updating electrical wiring, adding a dedicated circuit, or increasing panel capacity. These upgrades are especially common in older homes and will add to the total cost, but they are necessary to support the system safely and reliably.

Line Set and Installation Materials

Refrigerant lines connect the indoor and outdoor unit, along with communication wiring and a drain line. The distance between units and how those lines are routed affects both labor and materials. Longer runs, wall penetrations, or more complex routing will increase the price compared to a shorter, more direct installation.

Efficiency and Equipment Quality

Higher efficiency systems come with a higher upfront cost, but they use less energy over time. Many homeowners choose energy efficient units to help manage monthly utility bills, especially when the system runs often. Overall lifespan and performance depend heavily on proper installation and regular maintenance, not just the equipment itself.

The price of a ductless mini split in San Diego in 2026 can range from $3,000–$6,500 for a single zone system, $7,000–$10,500 for a dual-zone, and $13,000 to $18,000+ for a whole-home setup. Keep in mind this is a general estimate and not the exact cost for your home, as pricing can change based on your layout, system type, and installation needs.

What Else You Need to Know About Your Ductless Mini Split Installation

A big reason ductless AC systems are taking off in San Diego is simple—energy costs. With SDG&E rates, running traditional HVAC systems to cool an entire home all day gets expensive fast. A ductless setup lets you cool only the rooms you’re using, which gives you better temperature control and helps keep your energy bill from climbing.

There’s also a shift happening with equipment. New 2026 refrigerant rules are phasing in A2L refrigerants, and ductless systems have largely adapted faster than traditional HVAC systems. That means they’re already aligned with where the industry is going, while older equipment is being phased out.

When you combine that with how these systems adjust output instead of constantly turning on and off, they’re able to operate at maximum efficiency. The upfront ductless mini split cost can be higher, but for many homeowners, the day-to-day savings and flexibility are what make the difference.

I was told by a couple other companies that I needed to replace my system. Vlad came out and made sure that my old system actually needed to be replaced and found it could be fixed for a fraction of the price. I appreciate the honesty and would definitely recommend. Edit the technician came out and made the repairs. He did a good job of explaining the situation and giving a couple options.

Special shout-out to their service man, Mario F, who checked out our systems yesterday. We had Rob from Guthrie & Sons come out to repair one of our A/C units. Rob was very friendly and professional. Rob resolved the problem quickly.
As far as price goes, I paid a higher flat fee 12 years ago from one of the larger local companies. I'm very impressed with pricing and quality of work.

I highly recommend Guthrie & Sons and Rob.

Guthrie & Sons has always been super professional and knowledgeable about our system. They did the install a few years ago and have continued to maintain it for us. This year we noticed that our system wasn't performing as well, so when Wayne came out, he noticed a likely leak and was back 2 days later to find and fix it. He was quick, professional, and just extremely nice! 100% recommend.

Called one of the "big guys" in town and the estimate to do what needed to be done to diagnose my problem was nearly 1/2 the cost of the system when I purchased it and had it installed 5.5 years ago, I found Guthrie & Sons and they came out the same day and did the same work for 1/4 the price I was quoted for the same exact work! Daniel was friendly, honest and quickly got my system working as expected. I even purchased the service plan so I don't have future problems. I highly recommend these guys, they were awesome, don't get ripped off call Guthrie & Sons!!!

The air handler was carefully installed, wiring neatly secured, plenum perfectly fitted, and the condenser precisely positioned and leveled for proper clearance and vibration control. The line set was pressure-tested and vacuumed as well. They also left the work area clean and neat.

Please congratulate them for a job well done!

After dealing with several HVAC companies, Guthrie & Sons clearly stood out as the most ethical, honest, and reliable. From the very beginning, their approach felt transparent and genuinely focused on what was best for us—not on upselling or unnecessary replacements.

We worked with Vlad T., who had previously been out to our home and saved us tens of thousands of dollars by getting our existing AC unit up and running when other companies were pushing for a full replacement. That experience alone earned our trust.

Now that we’re finally ready to purchase new units, there was no question that Guthrie & Sons was the only company we would consider, and Vlad was the obvious choice. He was extremely professional, punctual, and exceptionally knowledgeable, taking the time to explain options clearly and thoroughly. His expertise and honesty made the entire process straightforward and stress-free.

If you’re looking for an HVAC company you can truly trust—one that values integrity, quality workmanship, and customer service—I cannot recommend Guthrie & Sons and Vlad T. highly enough. This is how service should be done.

The layout of my condo made installing splits challenging, and before I met with Guthrie and Sons, three companies either told me that it couldn't be done. Vlad studied my apartment until he found a way to install with minimal openings in the walls and without a second condenser. Mallory, who works in the office, always followed through and advised me when I ran into a hiccup and needed detailed plans for the city. My HOA appreciated Guthrie and Sons' thoroughness and was so impressed with the design, that another resident who had been wanting splits for years, decided to install splits at the same time. The team that came in was knowledgeable, professional, and hard working. They finished a day ahead of time. I'm thrilled with the way everything looks and works.

I’ve been using Guthrie & Sons for over 15 years. They installed my whole AC system and maintained it all those years and never had an issue. Well it was time for an upgrade and they’ve recently installed my second system. The team 15 years ago and the team this time around were both amazing, professional and clean. I can’t recommend them enough Matt, Ben, Christian and Bryan get 10 stars. They are a bit pricier but worth the investment when you have peace of mind and almost two decades of great service and no issues.
