How Does a Heat Pump Work?
Air source heat pumps don’t burn fuel—they use electricity to transfer heat from one place to another. In heating mode, they pull warmth from the outside air and move it indoors—even when it’s chilly outside. In cooling mode, it reverses direction like a traditional air conditioner, removing heat from your home and pushing it outside.
An air source heat pump system includes indoor and outdoor units connected by refrigerant lines, and it works with your new or existing ductwork to move heated or cooled air throughout your home.
Benefits of Installing a Heat Pump
Heat pumps aren’t just a trend—they’re the future. With energy prices climbing and HVAC technology evolving, more homeowners are moving away from the old furnace-and-AC combo.
Why juggle two bulky systems when one can quietly do both—and save you money in the process? Here are a few of the top reasons why you should install a heat pump:
Because heat pumps don’t generate heat, they use far less electricity than standard systems.
That means better efficiency and smaller utility bills.
You don’t need both a furnace and air conditioner anymore. One heat pump system covers all your heating and cooling needs in one setup.
Air source heat pumps reduce your home’s emissions and run without burning fuel. It’s a low-impact way to stay comfortable year-round.
Modern heat pumps are built for smooth, quiet operation and fewer unexpected repairs. They work in the background so your home stays peaceful.
Our region’s moderate climate is ideal for heat pump efficiency. Mild winters and warm summers make it easy for your heating and cooling unit to perform at its best.
Getting the most from your heat pump all comes down to how it’s installed. Even the best equipment won’t run like it should and save you what it should if it’s not sized, placed, and connected correctly. At Guthrie & Sons, we don’t rush the job. We do the prep work, double-check the details, and make sure everything’s set up to last. Because real comfort—and real savings—start with doing things the right way from the beginning.
How Much Does a Heat Pump Installation Cost?
The cost of heat pump installations depends on a few key things: your home’s size, layout, existing ductwork, and the type of system you choose. Labor, permits, and electrical upgrades can also affect the final number.

We Install the Best Heat Pumps for Your Home and Budget
If you’ve started researching heat pumps, you already know—there’s a lot out there. You might be reading buying guides, comparing brands, or wondering which system works best with your existing HVAC. The good news? You don’t have to figure it all out alone. We’ve installed hundreds of systems across San Diego County and know what works in real homes with real energy goals.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what to consider—we’ll go over all this (and more) during your consultation.
These ratings tell you how efficiently your heat pump cools and heats your home. SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures cooling efficiency—a rating between 15 and 18 is ideal for San Diego’s warm but not extreme summers.
HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) measures heating efficiency—look for 8.5 to 10, which is perfect for our milder winter months. Higher numbers mean lower energy use and lower energy costs without paying for more power than you need.
What does having the right size heat pump mean? It’s not about the physical size of the unit—it’s about how much heating and cooling power your home actually needs based on your home’s square footage and other factors. Too small, and your system will run nonstop. Too big, and it’ll short-cycle, wasting energy and wearing out faster.
Home size is a key consideration. For example, a 1,500 sq. ft. house in San Diego might need a 2.5-ton heat pump, but that depends on insulation, windows, and more. We’ll run a Manual J load calculation to make sure your system is matched precisely to your home—not too much, not too little—just right.
Today’s heat pumps offer more than just comfort—they come with helpful built-in features. From Wi-Fi thermostats you can control with your phone to zoned temperature settings and programmable schedules, we’ll show you what fits your lifestyle. These extras make a big difference in day-to-day convenience and long-term energy savings.
There are different types of heat pump systems: air source heat pumps and ductless mini split systems. Air source heat pumps connect to your home’s ductwork and are great for full-home heating and air conditioning. They work best in homes that already have a central HVAC setup—or for new construction where ducts will be installed.
If your home doesn’t have ducts—or you want to cool just a specific space—ductless systems are a flexible alternative. Instead of using vents, it relies on small wall-mounted units that heat or cool individual rooms. They’re great for older homes, additions, garages, or anywhere it’s tough or expensive to run new ductwork. And if you want to keep your existing furnace but upgrade your cooling, a ductless mini split air conditioner lets you do just that—no major remodel required.

Maintenance and Repairs That Keep Your Heat Pump Performing
A new heat pump can last 10 to 15 years—or longer—but it needs a little help along the way.
Like any system that runs year-round, regular maintenance and the occasional repair are key to keeping it efficient and working like it should.
Skip the tune-ups, and small heat pump issues can turn into bigger (and more expensive) problems. Thankfully, keeping things running smoothly is easy when you’ve got a team you can count on. At Guthrie & Sons, we offer maintenance and repair services that help you get the most out of your system year after year. We’ll keep things running right—so you can relax and enjoy reliable comfort in every season.
Schedule Heat Pump Maintenance Twice a Year
We recommend having your heat pump system serviced twice a year—once in spring before cooling season, and again in fall before heating season. During these tune-ups, our licensed technicians check refrigerant levels, inspect electrical lines, clean indoor and outdoor coils, test airflow and temperature control, and look for early signs of wear. We’ll also make sure your air handler, outdoor unit, and thermostat are all working together like they should.
Ask About Our USA Membership Plan
Want to save money and make things easier on yourself? Our USA Membership Plan is made for homeowners like you. It’s a simple way to stay ahead of issues, avoid costly breakdowns, and make sure your HVAC system stays strong for the long haul.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, heat pumps work great in San Diego because the climate is mild year-round. They’re not ideal for severely cold climates, but here, they handle both heating and cooling with ease. That’s why so many homeowners are making the switch.
Routine maintenance is key, especially near the coast where salt and moisture can cause wear. Our HVAC technicians inspect the system, clean components, test performance, and check refrigerant levels. It helps extend your system’s life and keep efficiency high.
Yes—it can handle your home’s heating and cooling in one system. A properly sized heat pump heats in the winter and cools in the summer. No need to keep a separate AC or furnace.
That includes running electrical lines, placing the outdoor unit, mounting the indoor air handler, and setting up your thermostat. The final step is testing the full system to ensure your heat pump heating and cooling system runs properly. Only a trained HVAC professional should install heat pump heating and cooling systems.

Just installed yesterday, so jury is still out on the system, but installation was thorough and great communication so far!
Updated review: Kareen, Daniel and Michael worked on the AC replacement, relocation of furnace to the attic and replacement of ductwork. Very professional and knowledgeable team in my opinion. Completed the work in a timely and very satisfactory manner.
Their customer service started with the on line completion of a basic information form. Shortly after submitting that form, I heard from Zach who scheduled an appointment at my home.
I had already met with three other HVAC contractors, and for that reason, I had some basic information about the systems available and how heat pumps work and whether propane furnaces should also be installed. I signed a contract on a Friday. By Wednesday of the next week they had completed the installation. Wow.
The installation of one of the furnaces in the attic caused minor damage to the drywall. THEY BROUGHT IT TO MY ATTENTION and told me a drywall contractor would be in touch regarding its repair. Two days later it was repaired.
Since installation, the equipment (heat pumps from Bosch) has been working great and I am optimistic about the future. Meanwhile, their pricing, warranty and terms are far superior to their competitors.
Since this is an unusually long review and so favorable, let me add this: This is my honest, uncompensated opinion. I have no relationship with anyone at Guthrie & Sons other than the contract we executed.
They respected my property and made sure everything was left at least as clean was when they arrived. The job was completed on time and as promised and they reviewed the details of the system and its use clearly. I would definitely have Guthrie and Sons do other electrical/HVAC work should the need arise.
Jonathan gave us the likeliest problems so we’ll have to get it fixed
