Benefits of Routine Heat Pump Maintenance
No one wants to be surprised by a broken heat pump on a hot afternoon or a cold morning. And no one enjoys calling for emergency repairs. The best way to avoid those situations? Stay on top of maintenance. A well-maintained heat pump runs better, lasts longer, and saves you money on energy and repairs. It’s not just about keeping your system clean—it’s about keeping your home running smoothly. Here’s why scheduling routine heat pump maintenance is worth it:
- Extended Lifespan: Most heat pumps last around 10–15 years, but with consistent maintenance, many systems can keep going strong for 18–20 years or more.
- Fewer Heat Pump Repairs: The average homeowner can expect to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on HVAC repairs over a system’s life, but many of those repairs are preventable with professional heat pump maintenance.
- Enhanced Efficiency: Heat pumps that haven’t been serviced in a while often lose 10–25% of their efficiency just from dust buildup, clogged filters, or low refrigerant.
- Protected Warranty: Nearly every manufacturer requires proof of annual professional maintenance to keep your warranty intact. If you skip a tune-up and something breaks, you could be left covering the full repair or replacement cost.
- Better Air Quality: A neglected heat pump can collect mold, mildew, pet hair, and dust that gets pushed back into your home every time it runs.
Don’t wait for your heat pump to call it quits—stay ahead with our heat pump check-up services. One quick visit can boost efficiency, cut energy costs, and more!
How Often Should I Have My Heat Pump Serviced?
Because your heat pump works double duty, it needs more frequent attention than a typical AC or furnace. At Guthrie & Sons, we recommend heat pump tune-ups twice a year: once in the spring before the heat hits and again in the fall before cooler weather rolls in.
Signs It’s Time to Schedule a Heat Pump Tune-Up Today
If it’s been more than six months since your last heat pump check-up, or you’re noticing things like:
- Longer run times to heat or cool your home
- Uneven temperatures from room to room
- Higher energy bills without a clear reason
- Weird noises like rattling, buzzing, or humming
…it’s time to book a heat pump maintenance appointment. Our HVAC technicians know these systems inside and out and offer heat pump tune-up services for air source heat pumps, absorption heat pumps, and ductless systems. We offer same-day servicing when possible and will always tell you what’s really going on without trying to sell you something you don’t need.

What to Expect During a Heat Pump Tune-Up
When you schedule heat pump maintenance with Guthrie & Sons, we don’t just breeze in, wipe down a few parts, and leave you with a bill. We take a detailed, hands-on approach to make sure your system is clean, efficient, and operating safely—because that’s what it takes to keep your home comfortable year-round. Each visit includes full heat pump inspection services, detailed heat pump troubleshooting, and minor heat pump repairs that make a difference in how your home feels. Whether your system has been acting up or it’s just overdue for service, we’ll get to the bottom of it and give you the expert heat pump services your home deserves.
Here’s what our technicians will do during your heat pump service in the San Diego area:
We begin by testing how your system starts and stops. It should kick on quickly, shut off cleanly, and switch between heating and air conditioning without delay. If it hesitates, we’ll figure out why.
Dirty coils are one of the biggest reasons heat pumps lose efficiency. We clean off grime, dust, and debris to help your system move heat more effectively—so it cools and heats your home faster and with less energy.
Loose wires can cause power loss, system failure, or even short circuits. We check every connection and tighten anything that’s out of place. It’s one of those small things that can prevent a big problem.
If your thermostat isn’t calibrated right, your system can run too long or not long enough. We make sure it’s accurately reading the temperature and communicating properly with your heat pump.
We check motors, fans, and other moving components for friction and wear. A little lubrication goes a long way in preventing breakdowns and keeping everything running quietly and smoothly.
Low refrigerant can lead to poor performance and compressor damage. We measure levels and pressures, look for signs of a leak, and make sure everything’s within the proper range.
A clogged drain line can back up water into your home or shut down the system completely. We clear out any blockages to keep moisture flowing out where it’s supposed to go.
We check your air filter and overall airflow to make sure your system isn’t being choked by dust or debris. If the filter’s dirty, we’ll replace it—or let you know what to grab if it’s a custom size.
Before we leave, we run your system in both heating and cooling modes to make sure it’s responding properly. If anything feels off, we catch it now, not when it’s 95 degrees or 40 and raining.
Need Other Heat Pump Support Services? We Repair and Replace, Too
During your heat pump tune-up in San Diego, if we find something small—like a weak capacitor or a loose fan belt—we’ll usually take care of it on the spot. But if your unit needs more involved heat pump repairs, we’ll walk you through what’s happening, what parts are needed, and what kind of work is involved.
And if it turns out your system is on its last legs, we’ll be honest with you. We’re not in the business of keeping a failing system alive just to patch it up again later. If it’s time for a heat pump replacement, we’ll help you find the right fit and walk you through our financing options, free online quoting tool, and help you take advantage of available rebates or tax incentives. We’ll help you save money now and set you up with a better system for the future.

Frequently Asked Questions
We recommend annual heat pump services: once in the spring and once in the fall. Since your system works year-round, this timing helps it run better in both heating and cooling seasons.
Yes! You can replace the air filter regularly, clear leaves or debris from around the outdoor unit, and keep vents unobstructed. Just leave the internal components and electrical work to trained HVAC heat pump maintenance technicians.
Our coastal air can cause salt buildup and corrosion, especially on outdoor coils and parts. Inland homes deal more with dust. Either way, routine heat pump cleaning services help keep your system efficient and protected year-round.
Costs vary based on your system, but we always offer clear pricing with no surprise charges or upsells. We also have a USA Membership Plan that helps lower your long-term heat pump maintenance and repair costs.

Just installed yesterday, so jury is still out on the system, but installation was thorough and great communication so far!
Updated review: Kareen, Daniel and Michael worked on the AC replacement, relocation of furnace to the attic and replacement of ductwork. Very professional and knowledgeable team in my opinion. Completed the work in a timely and very satisfactory manner.
Their customer service started with the on line completion of a basic information form. Shortly after submitting that form, I heard from Zach who scheduled an appointment at my home.
I had already met with three other HVAC contractors, and for that reason, I had some basic information about the systems available and how heat pumps work and whether propane furnaces should also be installed. I signed a contract on a Friday. By Wednesday of the next week they had completed the installation. Wow.
The installation of one of the furnaces in the attic caused minor damage to the drywall. THEY BROUGHT IT TO MY ATTENTION and told me a drywall contractor would be in touch regarding its repair. Two days later it was repaired.
Since installation, the equipment (heat pumps from Bosch) has been working great and I am optimistic about the future. Meanwhile, their pricing, warranty and terms are far superior to their competitors.
Since this is an unusually long review and so favorable, let me add this: This is my honest, uncompensated opinion. I have no relationship with anyone at Guthrie & Sons other than the contract we executed.
They respected my property and made sure everything was left at least as clean was when they arrived. The job was completed on time and as promised and they reviewed the details of the system and its use clearly. I would definitely have Guthrie and Sons do other electrical/HVAC work should the need arise.
Jonathan gave us the likeliest problems so we’ll have to get it fixed
