Signs You Need a Heat Pump Repair Company
A lot of homeowners move into homes with heat pump systems and aren’t sure how they’re supposed to behave. What’s normal? What’s a red flag? If you’re in that boat and looking for answers, here’s when to call for heat pump repair service:
Not Switching Between Heating and Cooling: Your heat pump should smoothly switch modes based on your thermostat setting. If it won’t change, gets stuck, or takes a long time to respond, there’s an issue.
- Running Nonstop: It’s normal for the system to run more when it’s really hot or cold, but it should cycle off now and then.
- Short Cycling: Your system should run for 10–20 minutes per cycle. If it kicks on and off every few minutes, that’s not normal and can wear out the system.
- Frost or Ice on the Outdoor Unit: A thin layer of frost is okay and should melt on its own. Heavy ice or freezing in mild weather means it’s time for service.
- Loud or Unusual Noises: A gentle hum is normal, but banging, clicking, humming, or screeching aren’t part of normal operation.
- Leaking Refrigerant: Your heat pump should never lose refrigerant. If it’s leaking, you need heat pump service right away.
- Big Spike in Utility Bills: A small jump between seasons is expected, but if your energy use suddenly shoots up, the system isn’t running efficiently.
Heat Pump Troubleshooting Tips
We don’t recommend trying to fix your heat pump yourself, no matter how easy that online tutorial makes it look. But we’re all for a little light troubleshooting before you call, especially if it saves you time and money.
- Check the Thermostat Settings: Make sure it’s set to “heat” or “cool” (not just “on”) and that the temperature is set a few degrees above or below the current room temp.
- Inspect the Air Filter: A clogged or dirty filter can restrict airflow and make the system work harder—or stop working altogether.
- Flip the Breaker: Check your electrical panel to make sure the heat pump hasn’t tripped the breaker, especially if it shut down unexpectedly.
If none of that fixes things, you need our heat pump contractors to come out. Trying to fix electrical or refrigerant issues on your own can lead to expensive damage, void your warranty, or even create a safety hazard.

Restore Your Home’s Heating and Cooling With Our Heat Pump Repair Service
A heat pump keeps your home comfortable by moving heat—pulling it out when it’s hot, bringing it in when it’s cold. Wear and tear is normal, and over time, things can start to slip—airflow gets weaker, parts wear out, or it just doesn’t switch modes the way it should.
At Guthrie & Sons, we handle these common heat pump repairs and more. Whether it’s a simple fix or a full system issue, we have the heat pump solutions that you need.
If your system is set to cool but it’s pushing out warm air, something isn’t switching properly. This often points to a problem with the reversing valve, thermostat, or control board. We’ll test the system, confirm the source, and replace the part if needed.
Heat pumps should cycle on and off depending on indoor temperatures—not run all day. If yours is constantly running, it could be low on refrigerant, misreading the thermostat, or struggling with airflow. We’ll check for blockages, test refrigerant pressure, and make adjustments or repairs as needed. When we’re done, your system will work more efficiently and your wallet will thank you.
Banging, buzzing, or screeching coming from your heat pump? That’s not just annoying—it’s a sign something’s wrong. It might be a failing motor, loose components, or electrical arcing. Our heat pump experts will find the cause fast and get things tightened up, replaced, or rewired as needed. We’ll leave your system running smoothly—and quietly.
A little frost in winter can be normal, but thick ice or freezing during mild temps isn’t. Your system might have a blocked airflow, sensor issue, or be low on refrigerant. We’ll safely defrost the unit, fix the underlying issue, and restore normal function.
When your heat pump doesn’t turn on at all, the problem could be electrical, mechanical, or thermostat-related. We’ll start with a full diagnostic—checking the thermostat, breakers, capacitor, and more. Once we find the issue, we’ll walk you through your options clearly before making any heat pump repairs.
Short cycling wears down your system and makes your home less comfortable. This could be caused by dirty filters, overheating, or a failing control board. We’ll pinpoint the cause, make the fix, and prevent unnecessary wear on your heat pump system. Once resolved, your heat pump will run in steady, normal cycles again.
If your heat pump is leaking, it’s likely one of two issues. The first is excess condensation that isn’t draining properly, usually caused by a clogged drain line, dirty coil, or frozen coil due to low refrigerant. When that ice melts, the water can overflow. The second—and more serious—possibility is a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant leaks can cause poor performance, higher energy use, and ice buildup. If we suspect a leak, we’ll run a full diagnostic, find the source, and repair it safely.
At Guthrie & Sons, we always try to fix the problem first. We’ll inspect your HVAC system and recommend the most practical solution. But sometimes, repairing a heat pump just doesn’t make sense—especially if it’s more than 10–12 years old, the compressor has failed, or the heat pump repair cost is close to what you’d spend on a brand-new system.
If that’s the case, we’ll walk you through your options. We offer convenient financing, a free online quote tool, special offers, and help with any rebates or tax incentives available in California. Our goal is to help you upgrade to a system that works better, saves energy, and fits your budget, without any stress or sales games.

Frequently Asked Questions
Compressor replacement is usually the most expensive type of HVAC heat pump repair. It’s a major component, and in older systems, the cost can rival a heat pump replacement.
The most affordable fixes are usually related to thermostats, clogged filters, or a tripped breaker. These minor issues often cost less and can be caught early. We’ll give you a clear diagnosis so you know exactly what’s needed and what’s not.
It depends on what’s wrong, but we always start with a full heat pump repair estimate. Costs vary based on the part, labor, and whether it’s a quick fix or something deeper. We’ll explain everything clearly so there are no surprises with your HVAC repair bill.
Yes—older systems are more likely to need harder-to-find parts or multiple repairs. In some cases, putting money into a failing system costs more than it’s worth. We’ll help you compare your repair costs to a replacement and make the best call.

Just installed yesterday, so jury is still out on the system, but installation was thorough and great communication so far!
Updated review: Kareen, Daniel and Michael worked on the AC replacement, relocation of furnace to the attic and replacement of ductwork. Very professional and knowledgeable team in my opinion. Completed the work in a timely and very satisfactory manner.
Their customer service started with the on line completion of a basic information form. Shortly after submitting that form, I heard from Zach who scheduled an appointment at my home.
I had already met with three other HVAC contractors, and for that reason, I had some basic information about the systems available and how heat pumps work and whether propane furnaces should also be installed. I signed a contract on a Friday. By Wednesday of the next week they had completed the installation. Wow.
The installation of one of the furnaces in the attic caused minor damage to the drywall. THEY BROUGHT IT TO MY ATTENTION and told me a drywall contractor would be in touch regarding its repair. Two days later it was repaired.
Since installation, the equipment (heat pumps from Bosch) has been working great and I am optimistic about the future. Meanwhile, their pricing, warranty and terms are far superior to their competitors.
Since this is an unusually long review and so favorable, let me add this: This is my honest, uncompensated opinion. I have no relationship with anyone at Guthrie & Sons other than the contract we executed.
They respected my property and made sure everything was left at least as clean was when they arrived. The job was completed on time and as promised and they reviewed the details of the system and its use clearly. I would definitely have Guthrie and Sons do other electrical/HVAC work should the need arise.
