Trust the HVAC Repair Team That’s Been Here for Decades
We’re not some big chain just passing through town. Guthrie & Sons is a second-generation, family-run company that’s been working on HVAC systems in San Diego buildings since 2005. Our techs are NATE-certified, which means they’ve gone through the highest level of training and testing in the industry so you’re getting someone who really knows what they’re doing.
We have fully stocked trucks out every day across San Diego County and the nearby area—from Oceanside to Chula Vista, El Cajon to Carlsbad and Temecula—so when you call, we’re already close by and ready to get to work. We don’t drag it out or leave you with a half-done job—we work quickly, fix it fully, and make sure it’s done right the first time.
How Much Will My HVAC Repair Cost?
We get it—this is the first question you want answered. And while pricing can vary, we’ll always start by coming out, inspecting your system, and talking through what’s going on. Then we’ll give you clear options, get your go-ahead, and get the work done.
Here’s what to keep in mind about your HVAC repair costs:
- Smaller HVAC repairs usually cost less and often involve things like a faulty thermostat, a clogged drain line, or a worn-out capacitor.
- Bigger issues—like a failing blower motor, heat exchanger, or a refrigerant leak—can cost more, and in some cases, the price starts to approach what you’d spend on a new system.
- The age and condition of your equipment also matter. Older systems tend to need more labor, and replacement parts can be harder (and more expensive) to find.
We’ll never push you to replace what can be repaired. For most issues, repair is the smarter, more affordable route—and we’ll always guide you toward the best solution for your system and budget.

Heating and Cooling Repair
Wondering if we can repair your heating and air conditioning unit? The answer is yes! Our San Diego HVAC repair company works on all major heating and cooling systems.
Wondering if we can repair your heating and air conditioning unit? The answer is yes! Our San Diego HVAC repair company works on all major heating and cooling systems.
If your AC isn’t cooling like it used to, feels weak at the vents, or runs constantly without results, you need an air conditioning repair. It could be low on refrigerant, the coil might be frozen, or a filter could be clogged with dust. We’ll check everything from airflow to electrical parts, clean it up, and get your system cooling again.
Mini-splits are great—until a unit stops responding, starts leaking, or throws a blinking error code. Most of the time, it’s a blocked drain, a faulty sensor, or a control board issue. These things happen with regular wear and tear. During your mini-split repair, we’ll troubleshoot the system, clear out any clogs, reset what needs resetting, and swap out parts if needed.
A heat pump relies on the reversing valve to switch between modes and refrigerant to keep everything moving. But if the refrigerant is low, the valve sticks, or the coil ices up, your system might blow the wrong temperature or stop altogether. When you call us for a heat pump repair, we’ll test the system, find what’s throwing it off, and make the necessary repairs.
If your furnace isn’t turning on, keeps shutting off, or sounds like something’s shaking inside, it’s time for a furnace repair. Often it’s a worn ignitor, a dirty flame sensor, or a blower motor starting to fail. We’ll do a full checkup to figure out what’s causing the trouble and take care of it so your heating system runs smoothly once again.
Indoor air quality products are one of the best upgrades you can make for your home. Because of our dry climate and long cooling seasons, you made a smart decision by installing one. But like anything connected to your HVAC system, these units can break down, too. When they do, we’re here to repair them, along with the thermostats that help control your whole system.
When your air purifier isn’t cleaning the air like it used to, the filter may be clogged or the unit could have a failing fan or UV light. We handle all types of air purifier repairs, from basic maintenance to part replacement.
If your whole-home dehumidifier isn’t draining, keeps shutting off, or feels like it’s doing nothing at all, a quick dehumidifier repair is in order. We often see blocked drain lines, faulty float switches, or sensors that need recalibrating.
Sometimes the issue isn’t with your HVAC unit—it’s the thermostat sending the wrong signals. Faulty sensors or wiring can stop the system from turning on or reaching the right temperature. We’ll take care of the thermostat repair so your heating and cooling systems respond correctly.
Do I Need an HVAC Repair or HVAC Replacement?
In most cases, if your system is under 10 years old and the issue is isolated or minor, an HVAC repair makes sense. But if your system is 12–15 years old or more, has a history of repeated breakdowns, or the HVAC repair cost is getting close to half the price of a new unit, it may be time to consider an HVAC replacement.
If that’s the case, we’ll walk you through the options. We offer financing, a free online quoting tool to help estimate costs, and we’ll even help you find manufacturer rebates, seasonal discounts, and any available tax incentives in the San Diego area. We don’t pressure you to replace what can be repaired—we just give you the honest facts.

Make Fewer Repair Calls With More Regular Maintenance
It may not always seem like it, but we ask a lot from our HVAC systems. We run the AC all day when it’s hot, the heat on cold mornings, and air purifiers during wildfire season—all sometimes in the same week. Our air also has dust, salt, and moisture in it, and that stuff gets into your system. Coils get dirty. Filters clog. Parts overheat. When you skip maintenance, those things pile up and turn into expensive HVAC repairs.
No matter what kind of system you have, annual HVAC maintenance makes a big difference. At Guthrie & Sons, we offer seasonal tune-ups for everything—ACs, heat pumps, furnaces, and mini-splits. Want to make it even more worth your time and money? Our USA Membership Plan gives you priority service, repair discounts, reduced service fees, and extended warranty options. We have plans to fit your needs and your system. Talk to your technician or give us a call to find out more.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, all of our HVAC repairs are backed by a workmanship warranty. We’ll go over the details with you before any work begins. We stand behind everything we do.
First, check your thermostat settings and circuit breaker—sometimes it’s a quick fix. If that doesn’t work, give us a call and we’ll send someone out. We’ll find the issue and walk you through your options.
We don’t recommend it. HVAC systems involve high-voltage electricity, gas, and refrigerant—none of which are safe to troubleshoot without training. Give us a call and let a licensed technician take care of it.
Most repairs can be diagnosed and fixed in one visit. It depends on the problem and whether parts are needed. Either way, we work quickly and keep you informed every step of the way.

Just installed yesterday, so jury is still out on the system, but installation was thorough and great communication so far!
Updated review: Kareen, Daniel and Michael worked on the AC replacement, relocation of furnace to the attic and replacement of ductwork. Very professional and knowledgeable team in my opinion. Completed the work in a timely and very satisfactory manner.
Their customer service started with the on line completion of a basic information form. Shortly after submitting that form, I heard from Zach who scheduled an appointment at my home.
I had already met with three other HVAC contractors, and for that reason, I had some basic information about the systems available and how heat pumps work and whether propane furnaces should also be installed. I signed a contract on a Friday. By Wednesday of the next week they had completed the installation. Wow.
The installation of one of the furnaces in the attic caused minor damage to the drywall. THEY BROUGHT IT TO MY ATTENTION and told me a drywall contractor would be in touch regarding its repair. Two days later it was repaired.
Since installation, the equipment (heat pumps from Bosch) has been working great and I am optimistic about the future. Meanwhile, their pricing, warranty and terms are far superior to their competitors.
Since this is an unusually long review and so favorable, let me add this: This is my honest, uncompensated opinion. I have no relationship with anyone at Guthrie & Sons other than the contract we executed.
They respected my property and made sure everything was left at least as clean was when they arrived. The job was completed on time and as promised and they reviewed the details of the system and its use clearly. I would definitely have Guthrie and Sons do other electrical/HVAC work should the need arise.
Jonathan gave us the likeliest problems so we’ll have to get it fixed
