The highly anticipated High Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Act (HEEHRA) program has officially launched. Offering up to $8,000 in rebates, this program assists low- to moderate- income households to convert their gas appliances to electric.

What is the Tech Clean California rebate program?

Tech Clean California is a statewide rebate program to incentivize homeowners to go green and electrify their home. Convert your existing gas heating system to an electric heat pump system and receive rebates up to $1,500.

With the rise of induction cooktops, heat pump water heaters, and heat pump HVAC systems, building electrification has been a hot topic the past few years. So, why has there been a shift in electrification?

Climate: As a statewide effort to go green, California Senate Bill 100 requires 60% of California electricity to be generated by renewable resources by 2030 and 100% carbon-free by 2045. By converting natural gas appliances to electric, there has been a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

Cost Savings. With the rise in popularity of solar panel systems, shifting appliances from gas to electric powered greatly reduces energy costs for customers who have solar.

Health & Safety. Removing combustion appliances from the home reduces the risk of carbon monoxide leaks in the home. Furthermore, the conversion to electric HVAC systems reduces emissions in the air.

Starting in 2030, gas heating and water heating equipment will no longer be sold in California.

What are the Tech Clean California rebate incentives?

The amount you receive from Tech Clean California is dependent on if you have an existing air conditioner that will be replaced with a new heat pump system. If you are replacing your gas heater with no existing air conditioner, you will receive $1,000 per unit. If you are replacing your gas heater with an existing air conditioner, you will receive $1,500 per unit.

Who is qualified to receive this rebate?

San Diego homeowners who are converting their existing gas heaters to an all electric heat pump system are eligible. Homeowners must enroll in a Demand Response program with SDG&E to qualify for this rebate.

What is a Demand Response program?

Enrolling in a Demand Response program with SDGE is required to receive this rebate. Your energy rates fluctuate depending on demand. When demand is at its peak, rates are at their highest. A demand response program encourages homeowners to temporarily adjust their energy usage to avoid the higher rates.

When enrolled in a Demand Response program, you’ll maximize your energy savings, while helping to reduce the load of California’s energy grid making it cleaner, more reliable and more affordable for everyone.

What HVAC projects qualify under this rebate program?

The purpose of this rebate is to incentivize San Diego homeowners to convert their appliances from natural gas to electric. Therefore, to qualify for the Tech Clean California rebate, your project must meet these requirements:

You must convert your existing heater (and/or air conditioner) to a heat pump. If you do not have an existing gas heater, you do not qualify for this rebate.
Must be installing a qualifying Energy Star product. See a list of qualified products here.
Must be installing a two stage or variable speed system. Single stage systems do not qualify.

Does the Tech Clean California rebate stack with other incentives?

Yes! The Tech Clean California rebate can be stacked with the HEEHRA Rebate (up to $8,000 per household) and the 30% Federal Tax Credit (capped at $2,000).

Carson Snyder and co-worker (Pablo?) did a great job on the installation of the mini-split cassette. They're hard working, they clearly knew what they were doing, polite, cleaned up afterwards, true professionals. I'd gladly recommend these two gentlemen. However, the Company was not good at keeping me informed although I mentioned to the salesman up front that I was information driven. They were short on details and communicated seldom. Anthony did tell me about the government program available that reduced my cost. I wouldn't have known about it if he didn't mention it. The City did approve their work and signed off on the permit which is an indication of the job done right. I think the Company can improve their customer service

Very pleased with the service we received from Guthrie & Sons! Our AC system needed to be replaced after a huge leak. The tech that came out for diagnosis, Mario, took the time to explain the issue to us, as well as our options for repair. They came out on a Saturday to diagnose and it was fixed the following Tuesday. Matthew was the worker that completed the repair and he did an excellent job. Pricing was reasonable. Much more reasonable than the first company we had come out to take a look. We upgraded our system and our SDG&E bill has already gone down. Highly recommend!

Last summer, I used Guthrie and Sons to replace my heating system with a new one and added an air conditioning unit. We also added two different zones in the house to be able to turn the system on independently from one zone to another. From the first contact to the six month maintenance visits, everything has gone smoothly. There were a couple of hiccups, but the company is very responsive and I have never had an issue with them not promptly responding and taking action to figure out and solve any problem. Had use Guthrie in the past for HVAC service, this time had them install a solar attic fan and additional vent. The service, as it had been the first time, was professional, polite, and on schedule. Pricing was fair (and consider that they offered a repeat customer discount without having to be asked). Would be happy to use them again when the need arises.
I offer 4 stars because I'm not a grade inflation sort. Three is sufficient, four is better than average. Five is reserved for knock my socks off amazing in ways I didn't expect - doesn't happen very often.

We had central heat and air put in two a year and a half ago. We've need to make a few adjustments to airflow to rooms since then.
